Neurodiversity: Discovering the Extraordinary Gifts of Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Brain Differences

Armstrong (7 Kinds of Smart), an educational consultant turned author, argues that there is no normal brain or normal mental capability and that we are making a serious mistake in assuming that the kinds of differences we see in people with conditions like autism or dyslexia involve only deficits. People with these conditions also have strengths, he emphasizes, and by focusing on these, rather than on the labels, we can find the modes of learning and living that can help them thrive. Focusing primarily on seven labels (autism, ADHD, dyslexia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, intellectual disabilities, and schizophrenia), He offers some good teaching tips. - © Reed Business Information

A Time for Growth:
Summer Challenge
2011
by Vicy Wilkinson,
Director of Coaching Services

My colleague and friend, Steven Huskey, has a great set of questions he often uses to prompt people to start thinking about getting more of what they want out of life.  Those two questions are:  What is one thing you could STOP doing today that would have a positive impact on your life?  and What is one thing you could START doing today that would have a positive impact on your life.

As we kick off another summer in South Carolina, filled with peaches and beaches, I would ask you all both of those questions... and challenge you to use them during this summer to change your life.

Research shows that it takes about 21-28 days to create a new pathway in your brain.  So during the month of June, you can work on creating one new pathway.  At the same time, you can work on disconnecting one old pathway that is no longer serving you.

How many of you have tried to "break a habit" with little or no success?  The habit-breaking is the hardest part.  However, by doing BOTH of these things at once - starting a new thing and stopping an old one - you make it a lot easier to be successful.  It is much easier to STOP doing something if you START doing something in its place simply because nature abhors a vacuum.

Research also shows that those new pathways are very much like ideas - slippery, ethereal, and easy to derail.  Therefore, after you build the pathway in the first month, it's important to reinforce it for another 60 days until it becomes a true habit.  Once you've STOPPED one thing for about 90 days and STARTED a new thing for about 90 days, you will have replaced your old "bad" habit with your new "good" habit! And the great news is that habits are EASY to keep up.  So this exercise will help you get closer to your true goals while teaching you a process that is repeatable in your life.   By completing this challenge, you will make your life both easier and better suited to your true goals.

My challenge for all of you is take this summer - now through September - ACT on your answers to these two big questions: What is one thing you could STOP doing today that would have a positive impact on your life?  and What is one thing you could START doing today that would have a positive impact on your life.

Make this summer a time of positive change in your life!  By Labor Day, you will have succeeded in getting rid of one old "habit" and replacing it with a new and improved one that YOU selected to move yourself forward.  How exciting!

I encourage you to find us on Facebook and keep us posted about your progress so that we can all support each other as we begin this summer journey of out with the old and in with the new!

Find us on Facebook and keep us posted about your progress!  That way, we can all support each other as we begin this summer journey of out with the old and in with the new!

Good luck and HAVE FUN with your changes! Just remember, change is inevitable, but growth is optional!

Namaste.
